Description

This is my entry to the "Artistic Journey Challenge" hosted by DA and Ai. I feel I have read the rules carefully enough, but if you see am breaking any rules, please let me know. In regards to ©, there is one character who belongs to someone else (my best friend), and she has given me specific permission for including Mau in this piece.

I've got a long way to go, but I feel like I've also come very far.

Here are some parts of this piece I feel are noteworthy:

Yangu (the kangaroo with wings, upper middle): As a student I want to learn about the industry, the different ways I could work in the field and how I could contribute as an animator relating to my strengths. But as a growing artist I am extremely character driven. I love drawing animals and personalities. I enjoy bringing them to life and giving them emotion, movement and depth. My favorite part of animating is character animation for these reasons, and it's a dream of mine to bud this passion into a career.

Aya (the white bunny with bows, upper middle): Aya represents my awesome sister-- along with the support I receive from her and the rest of my family. Their encouragement has always helped me and keeps me moving forward.

Mau (bottom middle): Mau represents my best friend MahoHaku. She's taught me a lot of things. We encourage each other, draw together, and she's been a big part of my artistic growth.

Ai (bottom left): I've been a Media Arts and Animation student attending AiC since 2010 (full time for a year, then part time). This is where I've met great teachers and eager artists, one of which is my best friend. Before college I didn't even know what Photoshop was, and now I consider myself fairly fluent with numerous programs I didn't even know existed when I was in high school. I have another year before I graduate, and I hope to enter into the first portfolio class out of three soon. I would not be where I am now without attending this college.

3D (middle left): Learning how to use 3D modeling/animating programs is probably one of the harder things I've had to do in the last four years, partly because there is so much information to take in. It was so different and foreign, and I'm still learning a lot about it with each class.

Life Drawing (left middle): For some life drawings I time myself (most of the time on poses and practice) but often times I just sit when I know I have enough time, and go. The quail with her chicks was from part of a 'field trip' to the Museum of Nature and Science. I spent half the time there working on that piece. The horse drawing is one from a digital session I found while at home.

Using Geometry (cat and human, middle): One of the HUGE advancements for me was learning how to use shapes to form bodies instead of 'outlining'. I remember thinking I didn't need to use the 'oval for a head' to draw a head, but I realized in time that it was an important tool in keeping anatomy accurate and appealing.

Bobby (the acrobat boy, bottom left): Out of all the characters I've drawn, I believe Bobby is the one I've drawn the most aside from Yangu (this is not shown on DA, most of the art I have of him is in many sketchbooks). He's helped me keep in practice with anatomy and pose... and he's probably the most in-depth character I've ever created.

Architecture/Perspective and Proportion (bottom right corner): This was the piece I liked the most when I was in Tom's Perspective and Proportion class. It also brings back memories of the class as a whole- I had never really done architecture before, and it was the 'wake up' time in college when half the students dropped out because they expected Art college to be easy. After this class, I was more confident that I was in the right major (even if my procrastination 'skills' were in peak condition).

Mediums (from notebooks to pen tablets): My first sketchbook was gifted to me by my good friend in 7th grade, almost a decade ago. I remember filling it with dragons and Inu-Yasha characters, and I still have it to look back on. The change in medium feels like a parallel to my 'readiness' for working professionally. I don't know for certain if I'm quite ready for it yet, but I want to keep pushing forward and reach that point.
